Biography
As Director of the High-Performance Computing Division and Project Director for NWSC-3, Irfan Elahi brings over 32 years of experience in commissioning and operating high-performance computing technologies. With a specialization in HPC, high-performance storage and filesystems, tape archive, user support and application consulting for HPC workloads, and data center operations, Irfan has led the procurement, commissioning, and operations of HPC technologies for 20 years. Under Irfan's leadership, the HPCD division at NCAR was created to break silos and bring together all HPC operations under a cohesive team. He launched the NCAR HPC User Group (NHUG) and multiple communities of practices to enhance collaboration and knowledge-sharing. Irfan is currently leading the task force for Carbon-Free Electricity for the NWSC and other sustainability initiatives, while also driving the implementation of AI for IT Operations (AIOPs) at NWSC, creating digital twins for NWSC, and reaching out to underrepresented demographics to democratize HPC resources.
