Biography
Ugo Varetto is Chief Technology Officer at the Pawsey Supercomputing Centre located in
Perth, Australia.
He has held key roles in significant research projects, such as the EU funded “Human Brain
Project”, has contributed to numerous European supercomputing projects and has worked
in commercial companies and government and academic institutions in the USA, Europe and
Australia.
Mr. Varetto has been developing GPU-accelerated software for computer graphics since
1995 and scientific computing since 2006, and was actively involved in the deployment of
the first GPU-enabled supercomputers.
He is currently working on designing and implementing scalable data-intensive computing and storage solutions on hybrid supercomputers and object storage systems,
while contributing to international research projects such as the Square Kilometre Array
(SKA).
Mr. Varetto is currently leading the deployment of two room temperature quantum computers and
is partner investigator in a quantum communication research project.
