Biography
Dr. Sharmistha Bagchi-Sen is a Program Director in the Computer Information Science and Engineering (CISE) Directorate at the National Science Foundation. She manages programs in Cybertraining in the Office of Advanced Cyberinfrastructure (OAC). She also served as a Program Director in Behavioral and Cognitive Sciences (2020-2021). She received her B.Sc. in Geography from Calcutta University, India. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Georgia in Athens, GA. She was a tenured faculty member at the University at Buffalo-State University of New York from 1993 until 2021. Her current affiliation is Arizona State University. Her research interests are in urban and regional analysis with a particular focus on understanding spatial patterns in socio-economic-demographic-health indicators, innovation in small- and medium-sized enterprises, and labor outcomes in the United States. She has published 100+ peer-reviewed articles and book chapters. Her recent book is entitled Shrinking Cities: Understanding Urban Decline in the United States.
