Biography
Dr. Phani Motamarri is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Computational and Data Sciences, Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore. Before this, he was a research faculty member at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, USA after receiving a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering. During his Ph.D, he received the Rackham Predoctoral fellowship and Robert Melosh Medal for the best student paper on finite element methods. His primary research interests include developing HPC/AI-centric computational algorithms that can leverage extreme-scale computing architectures for quantum modelling of materials and harnessing these to address complex material science problems. He is one of the lead developers of DFT-FE, an open-source code for massively parallel DFT calculations that was nominated as a finalist for the ACM Gordon Bell Prize in 2019. He is also the recipient of the SERB Early Career Research Grant and the NSM Exascale for R&D grant awards in India.
